Wii Sales
The Wii numbers are insane, and there's no simple explanation for it. More importantly, there's no reason to believe it can be duplicated by someone else.
There's some weird psychology going on with the Wii. It's kind of like a Pet Rock fad coupled with gadget-hounding plus some good ole rampant consumerism thrown in. The Wii is not just selling to "casual gamers", whatever that is, nor is it creating a whole demographic of casual gamers.
It blows my mind, but I know a crap-load of people who've spent $249 to play only Wii Sports....and they are very happy about it! If I was a non-gamer and I dropped two and a half bills to play Wii Sports, I'm thinking I'd be feeling some buyer's remorse. But these people don't seem to regret a thing. It's weird. They aren't turning into gamers and they aren't buying more games. They're just non-gamers that own a Wii, play boxing and tennis once in a while, and are happy about it.
I don't know that anyone can cut into that market. And I don't know how long these amazing sales numbers can keep going, either.
It's probably just a "perfect storm" of something different, Pet Rock fad, actual casual gamers, and "something for the kids" that let's the Wii juggernaut keep on rolling.
