Old Movie Reviews

With the addition of free movies via Video On Demand and the HDNET movie channel to my cable lineup, I've watched some really bad movies lately. I've decided that these are good words to live by: "If you vaguely remember an old move as being okay, don't watch it again now." It's better to continue thinking it was okay.

Maybe I just choose bad movies.

Tommy
Well, this about sums it up: Elton John wins the "actor of the movie" award, and runs away with it by a huge margin, for his portrayal of The Pinball Wizard. It's a one-song appearance in gigantic 2-story high shoes, but he does a great job of selling the fact that he is pissed about some blind punk kicking his ass at pinball and taking his crown. No, really. Elton John does a great job. Unfortunately it's really a bit-part in the scope of the movie and he is way better than anybody else in the whole thing. I am very disappointed that I didn't like this movie 30 years later.

200 Motels
Frank Zappa on tour doing a "hey, we're on drugs and we have a camera" movie. This is bad stuff. I think you have to be on some seriously high quality and strong acid to enjoy this movie. I made it to about the 15 minute mark and gave up.

Easy Rider
What??? Easy Rider is a classic! I watched it last night, and this is not a good movie. Well, if you want to watch a couple of "dudes" smoking joints by a campfire over and over again because that's never been shown on the silver screen before, this is your movie back in 1969. But it just doesn't hold up well. I'm sorry. I really wanted to enjoy this. The "blink cuts" reminded me of Laugh In and got downright annoying. And the 25 minute "let's drop acid in a N'awlins graveyard and fuck some ho's" scene was way way too long. Oh well.

Next up on "Bad Movie Reviews": a "Barbarella" / "Barb Wire" double feature.

Ugh. That's something I might actually do.
